Instead of a day off, MLK Day is seen as a day of service, honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 's calling to serve others. CES Cares is not having a meeting in January. Instead, we are offering suggestions of ways in which you can help your community to celebrate MLK Day.
1. Colonial School District is proud to host an annual Day of Service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day from 10:30 - 2:00 in the PW cafeteria. We encourage students and families to make their day off a "day on" by participating in various service projects at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School. This year's event is coming up on Monday, Jan. 19, 2026. Any questions, contact jlester@colonialsd.org.
2. Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, Philadelphia, PA, 19128
Come together to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy at the Schuylkill Center. All members of the community are invited to join us as we work on service projects aimed at protecting the health of our forests as well as supporting our Center. There will be a wide range of service projects available so everyone can participate. January 19 @ 11:00 am - 1:30 pm Free Registration required.
3. William Jeans Library:
For MLK Day 2026 (Monday, January 19), the William Jeanes Memorial Library in Lafayette Hill, PA, will likely host its annual MLK Day of Service for youth, offering activities like making care bags for kids and dog toys, building on past years, so check their official website (jeaneslibrary.org) or contact them directly closer to the date for exact times and registration details for this popular community event.
What to Expect (Based on Past Events):
- Activities: Teens (grades 6-12) and younger children (with adults) usually create items for local organizations like Ronald McDonald House or animal shelters.
- Donation Drives: They often collect specific items, so look out for lists of needed supplies like old t-shirts or small toys.

What is CES CARES?
- CES CARES is a volunteer organization made up of 4th and 5th grade students who want to make a difference. Together, we meet before school to plan and execute ideas to support groups in our community. Some students make posters to advertise our initiative and others write speeches to share with homerooms to spread the word. Examples of projects we have worked on include: collecting hats and gloves for school age children, purchasing holiday gifts for children in our community, collecting food for the Colonial Neighborhood Council Food Pantry, and supporting Alex’s Lemonade Stand within our school.
- Meetings are usually once a month. They are on a rotating schedule to enable students who have other morning commitments to attend as they are able. It’s ok if you can’t come to every meeting. Meetings are at 8:00am in the library. Notices of meetings will come home in eFriday folders the week before and additional information will be posted in our CES CARES Google Classroom-code: xqyreun7.
- This year we will be including a Google Form in the eFriday folder the week before the meeting. This is for you to sign up that you are attending the meeting. This will help us prepare for how many students will be attending the meeting as well as safety. A new form will come out before each meeting.
- All are welcome. If you have any questions, see Mrs. Lytle in Room 313, Mrs. Moyer in Room 327, Mrs. Baldwin in Room 222, Ms. Bento in Room 207, Mrs. Craytor in Room 205 or Ms. Yavorski in Room 210.
We hope to see you there!
